AMK Manufacturing Pipe Locator

Review

This product works like old dowsing sticks. Think it has something to do with very weak magnetic fields that different things emit. As with dowsing, some people have it, some don’t. You might first want to try using an old metal coat hanger bent in the same shape and see if you can pick up pipes. If not, try taking all the metal out of your pockets. If still doesn’t work for you, probably don’t want to spend money on one of these. If yes, then these are really slick. If you’ve “got it,” you can pick up all kinds of pipes.

these do work – R. Kominsky – USA
I have used this item before, and it will find buried metal pipes and wires. I have also made them myself for under a buck by bending welding rod into an L shape. I don’t know exactly why they work – I assume it has something to do with concentration of magnetic fields in the vicinity of the object. They don’t require any real expertice or unnatural ability… they just line up when you cross the burried object every time. They are used routinly by utility companies to find burried stuff.

Yep – ZERO stars – expensive dowsing rod. – HMMWV – santa clara, CA USA
If you were to make a dowsing rod by assembling a radio antenna and a bicycle grip you’d have this product. Beware the “no batteries required” – that’s because this does not do ANYTHING. If you tie a flag on it you might be able to tell what direction the wind is blowing with it. Why does amazon stock obvious junk when quality pipe detectors with transmitters and receivers can be purchased for under 0 – run on 2 9V batteries – and actually find your pipes, cables, and other burried stuff?

Perhaps this silly toy can also be used to tell you where to drill for water – by alligning itself with the “magnetic polarization” of the water molecule underground. For now – keep your in your wallet or google pipe detector transmitter receiver and you’ll have a wide choice of units that work based on sound principles hooking a low frequency transmitter to the pipe and using a real receiver that gives you direction with some models giving depth as well.

Pipe Locator, AMK Mfg, Northern Tool #15554 – Dennis J. Barkley -
The Product Description indicates this product “locates PVC plastic pipe” which is not true unless something inside or next to the pipe is generating a magnectic field.
This item relies on an operator holding the handle perfectly vertical while walking, otherwise the pointer will swing towards the direction of tilt. Therefore results can be influenced by an operator’s conscience or subconscience belief as to where a searched item is located. This appears to me to be the magnectic equivalent of a divining rod for water witching.
I would give this item a zero star rating if allowed by this review submission form.
